Prenatal exposure to alcohol is the leading cause of preventable
birth defects and developmental delays in Canadian children.
If you care for:
- Women who may become pregnant
- Women who are planning a pregnancy
- Women who are confirming a pregnancy
- Women who are pregnant
then you have the opportunity to make a difference. Talk to your
patients/clients about alcohol use in pregnancy today and you could
help prevent another child from being born with FASD.
What Can You Do
As a health care provider you play an important role in informing
women who could become pregnant about the risks of drinking alcohol
while pregnant. You can help prevent or decrease prenatal exposure
to alcohol by providing appropriate information and support, prior
to or during pregnancy.
